see87: 10 years studying the Holy Bible does not make one an expert. No one knows what the entire Bible says, as it is written for ages past, present and future. The prophet Daniel didn't know what God was going to do with the world in the "last days". I don't know either. The Holy Spirit both, inspired the writings within its pages and deciphers its meaning to an individual. You really don't think that I would trust any man's opinion or dogma, do you? The Bible is a fascinating piece of work dealing with history, people, places and future events. Prior to the printing press, Bibles were in short supply and knowledge thereof was sparse to say the least bit. The Holy Spirit is the catalyst to convert the mind and bring it in line with Jesus's mind set. This contributes to a relationship with Him ( called "spirituality") and every christian has their own relationship with Him [Jesus]. Usually; when people get in there and interpret the Bible THEIR WAY ... the trouble begins. The Bible then, becomes a competition in self-righteousness (religion) devoid of any "Spirituality" [relationship]. It not about competition but about relationship !!!

its a vaguely worded document that is unclearly translated and constantly condradicts itself every time it can.
The bible is living proof of Murphy's law... if it CAN go wrong, it WILL go wrong. It is not a very good instruction book on life, but its all simple people have heard of because for many many years it was the only book allowed by despots as it was a good way to control unliterate sheep.
I also think many people who say they are christian are just looking for attention and use religion as a way of starting a conversation and then justify their uneducated opinions with vague things they remember from sunday school when they were kids. Its a way of showing ones moral superiority and doing wrong things in the name of god for ones own benefit, and being able to justify it by misquoting crap from the bible. Hence many religious people are also mafia members assauging their own guilt about how they make a living.

i'm christian and i don't know anything about what the bible says
i think what your saying is a stereotype
the only thing i know is john 3:16
everyone thinks christians know the bible
if i'm asked what religion i am people ask me to tell them something out of the bible even though i'm only 14 years old
they expect even kids to know the bible and i hate those people
P.S. i can't answer your last question about how to switch

I don't think that pertains only to Christianity or The Bible. I don't think it can be limited to those two things. Ideally, we should all be well-read and educated in our faiths. We should all try like heck to live by those faiths, too. Which isn't easy... but sometimes people (of all faiths) do pick and choose which parts they 'like' and which parts they can 'accept' as liveable. Sometimes I think it's fear, often times it could be lethargy. Some people just can't let go, they have to have that pure control of their own lives. I'm not sure you'll find a true answer to this... Too many different people, too many different faiths, too many different circumstances. Obviously, Christianity is in the spot-light and easier to see, since it is the world's largest religion. I'm Christian by the way, and have had things I've had to work on in order to live by The Bible. I think there are a lot of people out there that get stuck on things sometimes, but eventually work out of it. Faith of any religion, is a life-long process.
There's a famous quote that I like to reference - "Everybody wants to 'be' manager. But nobody wants to 'do' manager."
A pastor of a friend of mine spun that around, to say "Everybody wants to 'be' Christian, nobody wants to 'do' Christian."
Regardless of one's religion, I think that quote is universal. To actually BE Christian, or Catholic, Muslim, etc.... is very hard. It's definitely a life of swimming upstream.
I apologize if I kind of made this my own.... I'm well-known for my tangents :)

WITH TEN YEARS IN A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL YOU CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND THAT THE BIBLE IS A VERY COMPLEX BOOK. THE BASIC MESSAGE IS SO SIMPLE THAT EVEN A CHILD COULD UNDERSTAND BUT THERE ARE THOSE ADULTS LOOKING FOR CREVICES TO SNEAK THROUGH THAT DO NOT EXIST. AFTER ALL IT IS A NEVER ENDING EXPLORATION. GOD BLESS YOU FOR ASKING ME TO PAUSE AND THINK ABOUT THIS!
Defend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy; Free them from the hand of the wicked.
Psalm 82:3-4

Build a bridge and get over it. Most of the "Christians" (including Catholics) are not behaving very Christian on Y/A. What happened to love thy neighbor and turning the other cheek. Geez, stop with the criticising already!

I consider myself a Christian, but don't know everything that's in the Bible. And, not all Christians think they know it.
You're also a Christian, because you believe in Christ. Catholicism is a man-made religion, just like many others.
Let's love and care for each other, for we are all His children!!!

Tread lightly my friend. When you engage the infiinite it is easy to see why we falter. After all, aren't we all on the same path to know and experience more of the truth? We are all the same, the only thing that separates us in the end is belief in the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end, who was, and is, and is to come.
Shalom.
