* STEP 1: Ask your family if anything is missing. A missing toy or a make up container could be blocking the toilet and if so will likely require you to use a toilet auger. If no one knows about anything missing, you're probably dealing with a clog.
* STEP 2: Place some old towels or blankets on the floor around the toilet, (no matter how careful you are, some water will likely splash onto the floor).
* STEP 3: Scoop water out of the toilet bowl into a bucket (not down the sink). Leave enough water to cover the plunger
* STEP 4: Insert the plunger into the toilet, making sure the rubber globe or cup is fully seated over the drain opening and covered with water.
* STEP 5: Push the plunger handle down with firm strokes. Increase pressure on the clog by pushing and releasing the plunger 10 to 15 times. Rough, careless plunging can damage the toilet bowl. If the clog isn't too tight, these bursts of increased water pressure caused by the plunger, will probably clear the obstruction.
* STEP 6: Attack tougher problems with a toilet auger (similar to a plumber's snake but covered in a plastic sheath to protect the toilet bowl from scratches (see "eHow to Use a Plumber's Snake"). Lost toys, tubes of makeup and stubborn clogs will all probably require an auger.
* STEP 7: Flush the toilet when you think the clog has moved. As a precaution, have the toilet tank lid off and be ready to stop the water flow by raising the ball in the toilet tank.
Tips & Warnings
* * Buy the highest-quality plunger you can.
* * If the plunger or the auger don't remove the clog, you options are to call in the pros or remove the toilet yourself and manually remove the blockage.
* * If you're desperate and can't get hold of a plumber, a strong wet/dry vacuum will sometimes be able to remove a clog.
* Be very cautious about using a chemical drian cleaner/opener in a clogged toilet. They are caustic and can cause chemical burns to the eyes or skin. Make sure that any product used is specifically marked as safe for use with porcelain, and follow the manufacturer's directions exactly. Never mix any of these chemical agents, as dangerous reactions could occur. Never attempt to plunge a toilet after you have put drain cleaner in the bowl.

I don't think chemicals do all that well on clogs. Try the plunger, then the auger, but if something is lodged in the toilet bowl drain line or the closet flange which is just under the toilet, then your last choice is to pull the toilet. it's pretty simple. 1-shut off the water, remove the water from tank & bowl using small cup, use a sponge in the tank, & remove the supply hose. 2-remove the nuts and washers that bolt it to the floor, some have covers you have to pry off, score any caulking under the toilet with utility razor. Now you're ready to pull the toilet off the flange being careful of the bolts sticking up. and if you left some water in the bowl, don't tip the toilet backward cuz the water will come out. You can tip it forward some though. Now take the toilet somewhere you can turn it over (spilling water) and inspect the underside or inside. There will be a wax ring either on the bottom of toilet or still on the floor. you have to scrape the old one off & get a new one. I've done this many times and I've found lots of things can clog a toilet like a tennis ball or popsicle sticks. Installation is the reverse of removal. Center the wax ring between bolts with plastic flange(if it has one) pointing down. Place toilet carefully so the bolts come through the holes. sit on it rocking from side to side to set the ring. tighten washers & nuts snuggly not too tight. If the toilet wobbles, the floor is not level and you have to get plastic shims to brace it. Hook up supply line and turn on water. See?...easy.

3 things. 1. use a plunger, if that does not work then go to 2. try an auger, if that does not work then go to 3. call a plumber which you might have some bad blockage in the drain line which you can't get at or it is too hard to remove. Oh and pouring hot water down toilet does not unplug a toilet because I work with a bunch of plumbers who know their stuff. Only time you should pour water down the drain is a floor drain if the p trap is bone dry which will allow sewer gas come back into the bathroom. The water should fill the p trap to prevent gas from coming back into room.

Well, I used to use a plunger but I was told not to by a plumber because the "O" ring which the toilet sits on, it is made of wax and each time u use a plunger it breaks up the O ring and then u have to replace it, if you dont then when u flush water will come out of the bottom of the toilet and u will have a big mess. My suggestion is to get a snake or drano!!

plunger, toilet chemicals to loosen the clog such as hair. . . etc. (we won't get into that. . . ) and sometimes a snake is needed. Toilet snakes very in price. . . manual snakes are cheaper. . . but still can be pricey. . . I have seen some in the store for as high as $400.00. Manuals vary. . . maybe $40 or so is the cheapest without buying something that isn't manufactured well. But, I would try the plunger and the chemicals first. Be careful with the chemicals though. . . wash hands, clothing. . . keep away from kids and pets. Dangerous stuff!

Pour a bucket a water into the toilet bowl until it flushes itself or use a good old plunger; those are the cheapest two options and have always worked as far as I can remember.
You can always buy drain chemicals in any supermarket but that last option is more costly, obviously.
The first two options shouldn`t cost you a thing!
Good luck!

If the plunger doesn't work, you use a "snake." You can buy one at the hardware store. It is a long, fairly stiff wire that you wind down the commode. It tears up whatever is clogging it.

boil water in the kettle. Pour in the entire contents while it's piping hot. Then chase it with a drink that is high in cafeine (caffeine moves things) and finally pour in about half a cup of bleach.
