there is a magneto inside the engine casing which is like an alternator on a car.its usually located on the sides.there should be a cap with a couple screws holding it on that can be removed and behind it is the magneto .thats more than likely the prob.you probably wanna take it into the shop.

Shorted stator was a classic problem on those bikes. Its located under the left engine cover. Find the three wires coming from it, they connect to the regulator/rectifier unit near the airbox as I remember. The three wires should have equal continuity between them, but, NO continuity between any of the wires and ground. If that checks out OK do the running test, set your meter on AC, run the engine at 5000rpm, you should be able to measure 75 volts between any two of the three wires. If that check proves OK then the problem is the regulator/rectifier unit.
Prices very, but, last I knew stator just under$200 (don't forget gasket) and reg/rec unit about the same. You won't need any special tools to replace either part.

ps its a GS1100 not gsx

george-b has a good description of the alternator test. My guess is you will find the rectifer/regulator to be bad.

I would venture to say that the voltage rectifier has gone bad.
