The Roman Republic started in 509 BC, It lasted until 27 BC.
Many people see the collapse of the Western Roman Empire (476 AD) as the end of Rome.
After this the Eastern Roman Empire was called Byzantium, however the inhabitants still called themselves 'Roman.'
The Byzantines continued to prosper (although in far less territory) until The Ottoman Empire attacked in 1453 AD

The interesting part of this question is the definition of what is meant by 'Empire' If it means subject peoples ruled by a state with an Emperor at its head, then the Roman Empire can only start with the accession of Augustus Caesar*. But this ignores the fact that the city of Rome had started to acquire territory long, long before that - first other city states in the Italian peninsular, the city states of Greece, Carthage right up to Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul. I disagree with your end date. Long before the fall of Rome in 476, the Empire had been divided into two halves, the Eastern and Western with two Emperors. It was only he Western Empire that fell in 476, the Eastern, based on Byzantium or Constantinople, lasting until the 15th century when the city fell to the Ottoman Turks. The inhabitants of this city did not just 'think' of themselves as Roman, they were Roman.
* Interestingly enough, only part of the British Empire had an Emperor at its head - that part being India. The remains of the Empire was still called that after Indian independence in 1947, although the monarch was not an Emperor/Empress.

If you count the Eastern empire, the Roman Empire lasted until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The Byzantines considered themselves Romans. Christianity wasn't a big part of the Western Empire until around 300 CE.

Octavian was given the title "Augustus" and "Imperator" by the Roman Senate in 27 BC. Before this, Rome was a republic, so technically the Roman Empire lasted for around 500 years.

Well if you set the Roman Empire falling in 476AD then that is the fall of the Empire. The Republic fell sooner. Any way Rome was founded Romules and Remus (theory) in 753BC. So do the math and you will find out the total time of domination of Rome.

Hey dip sticks quite making everyone calculate, from BC to after Christ yrs. From what I remember from parochial school the Roman Empire lasted over 1,300 yrs. Longer I believe than the next longest lasting empire the Egyptians.

There are a few answers.
Some date when the Republic fell.
Some date when the Empire fell.
Lastly, some say it NEVER fell. The Catholic church was a vital part of the empire and never fell. To this day it still sends authority worldwide.
