I have a 92 mercury with an AOD tranny in it and it shifts just fine but only if I have it in drive. If in overdrive, the car acts like its in nuetral but only in overdrive. It drives fine until it shifts into overdrive. I have only had the car for 1000 miles and it does just fine in the city but I am worried that other problems could get worse. I only paid 250 for it so I still feel I got a good deal. The shift control cable was off when I bought it and I got it rigged up for now but it does not seem to adjust. My main question is whether I have to remove and rebuild, or if I can try other options first? Please help in any way posible. I have heard that there is no hope and that it is going to have to be rebuilt. let me know if anyone can help

What type of tranny would be good to put in my car, since this AOD has had problems. I dont want to but in a used tranny just to have it fail. Any suggestions on good years of the AOD. I have a 4.6L engine

If the bushing was missing and the cable was loose at the carb when you purchased the vehicle, I would assume it had been driven that way for a while. The bushing was a common failure. The AOD is toast now, you have no high gear. The transmission will need to be replaced or rebuilt.

Why don't you try to replace the shift cable and adjust it properly before condemning the transmission. Rigged shift cables are asking for trouble.

Well in short...Yes, the tranny will need a rebuild. These trannys are real bad for burning up the O/D band..........Very common problem.........I've seem many with this problem over the years.........

Had the same problem with my Ford of that era, may it rest in peace. Ford/Mercury had some real issues with their transmissions for awhile.
