I personally would buy the controller from Microsoft. In the past, I have seen too many problems with the generic controllers--they just aren't made as well as the ones intended for the system.

Gears of War is an awesome game, my boyfriend and his pal played it for two days straight to beat it on the hard level. I would also recommend for the 360:

Call of Duty 3
GRAW (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare)
These two games are "war games," where you get lots of different guns and you have missions to fulfill.

Rainbow Six: Vegas
This is a game where terrorists have taken over Las Vegas and it is your duty to save the city. This was tops on my boyfriend's Christmas list.

Madden 07
The newest in the football franchise. A classic.

Tony Hawk Project 8
The latest Tony Hawk game offers new challenges for players--with new moves and new controls.

my wife and i play tiger woods pga tour 07 ( 06 is not worth buying) and marvel Ultimate alliance together. as far as controllers go the wireless ones from microsoft are the best but i do have a wired controller that i use as an extra for the occaisional three person frenzy ( the last time i checked my local meijers they had wired controllers in the clearance aisle for $12 )
also make sure you go ahead and spring for the premium system with the hard drive, you will end up spending alotof money to upgrade the core system.

Drywall from your ceiling or maybe a sibling touching it with sugar all over their hands...
