If the fever is high, you need to find out what is going on first.
First quesation would be is this the child first fever? if so take the child in for a check up, either at Dr. or ER. If the child has had fevers in the past then a regime that is used in the hospitals is alternating tylnol and motrin. Give the child tylenol then 4 hours later (if fever returns) give motrin, then in 4 hours if fever is back give tylenol. If you can not reduce fever or child vomits then they need to go to ER or Dr. DO NOT GIVE TEPID baths. This is a old practice and many people wind up with the wrong water tempature and only make the child worse. If the child's fever is high give the medication, put a light shirt on them and put on a diaper. You can let them be without a lot of clothing or blankets until the tempature starts coming down then cover the child as normal. A child will lose a lot of heat through the head so it is best not to cover head until childs body starts feeling more in the normal tempature range. If the child has a seizure then go to ER right away.DO NOT GIVE ASPIRIN. GIVE ALL MEDICATIONS AS DIRECTED ON THE BOTTLE.

I personally believe the quickest way to reduce fever in children is a bath - not cold, not warm, but tepid - just a little cooler than the body temperature otherwise it is torture to the poor child. Tepid will feel cold as it is. I used to use aspirin along with the bath but perhaps they don't use that any more. Use the medicine the doctor recommends to reduce the fever. Fever is there for a reason - to help fight the underlying problem, so complete remission of the fever may not be the goal - just to keep it from getting too high.

Dear Heavens! Although I truly appreciate the previous posters time and response; please DO NOT GIVE ASPRIN TO A CHILD!!!!
The possibly of Reye's syndrome is too great; and it's irreversible.
However, the other suggestions; Childrens Tylenol and a tepid bath (the poster that stated the asprin actually gave the best description of that type of bath).
Hope your little kiddo is feeling better soon. Don't worry if it's just a high fever; it will pass. We all get worried and generally for nothing. If the fever presists however, take little guy to doc make sure that there isn't an infection; ear, throat etc.
Best Wishes!

I give Tylenol and a cool bath ,( NOT COLD) if the fever is high then i keep light weight clothes as not to keep in the fever, and i use cold cloths on their forehead, An old wives tale was to put peeled onions in their socks to draw out the fever, I have never tried it but anything is worth the try

I have found that when my child has a fever the best thing to do is to remove most of the clothing. Give Ibrofen or Tylenol at the recommended dose. if they are syptomatic (miserable) give them a tepid bath, remember just warm not cold.
Also try something cool to drink or an iceblock. Try to cool the room down as well, but don't sit your child directly in the path of a fan.

I always use homeopathic remedies, I am sorry, I can't spell the one, but any health food store will have a remedy for fever and they are safe for all children. It works better and safer than tylenol.

Fever isn't necessarily bad. Fever is useful in fighting infections. If you always bring the fever down, your body may have a hard time fighting the infection. Here's a great link for detailed instructions.

For slight fever, you can just use ice packs to bring the temperaure down.
If you are looking for natural remedies, you can try this site: http://www.holistic-online.com/Herbal-Med/Remedies/hol_herbal-remedies-comfrey-elderberry-cold-remedy.htm
But if fever is high, you should go see a doctor and get medication.

lower their body temperature by putting them in a tepid bath - not cold - This usually makes them feel better and will help mom too.
Another way is an alcohol sponge bath - 50/50 water and alcohol - sponge on and dry off - the bathtub is usually better
