Hmm, I've often wondered. I think to an extent you are attracted to people because of your personal history with people who look similar, especially if that happened at an important time in your life.

For example, when I was nearly 14 I had a love-at-first-sight crush on a boy that lasted for years. He was tall and skinny with large green eyes, a big nose and sort of shaggy chestnut hair. Not surpringly, I tend to find these things attractive.

Many years later I fell in love with a boy (again it was at-first-sight) who was small and scrawny with shaggy dark hair, big brown eyes, a big nose and freckles - he looked very much like an older guy I had a thing for a couple of years before that.

(My bf looks like a cross between these two guys!!!)

On the negative side, I was assaulted by a tall, muscular, blond guy with short cropped hair and blue eyes. As a result, I tend to associate this look with something horrible, and somebody who looks like this, no matter how nice they are, is just not going to attract me physically.

Hormones?
In Plato's Symposium he described a speech given by Aristopnanes about eros (love); Aristophanes conjectured that in the beginning of time there were three sexes. Man/man, man/woman, and woman/woman. These people were very strong and planning to revolt against the gods, so the gods came up with a plan to make these people less powerful. They did this by separating the people in two. Aristophanes said that they would walk around aimlessly looking for their other half (or I suppose their true love). Perhaps this is why we are attracted to other people? We are always searching for our other half- and what attracts us to people is the idea that they could be that other half....

Personality is most important for me, but I do realize that looks also attract people, especially initially.

It could be someone's laugh, smile, kindness, eyes, sense of humor, etc. :)

It's like a chemistry between two people...and then you gravitate to each other!

For me, its a lot of things. Initially its usually a physical attraction but not always. I love to be around certain people who just seem to click with me. Funny, good humored, mellow folks who can carry a conversation and make things interesting.

there are a kind of rationalization why.... a million) In an section in which homosexuality isn't huge-spread by the society, attraction between opposite sexes is extra universal 2) We lived having the concept a guy is for a lady and a lady is for a guy.... 3) Stereotypes helps us extra to be drawn to the different sex.... 4) somewhat, like what all and dissimilar has reported... no longer something... you spot, there are circumstances once you seek for for that individual and boost it does no longer remember if that individual is a he or a she... it does no longer somewhat count number....

Usually when it a first meeting, it looks. But, if, a person looking for more than sex, in time it will be the personality, which requires time. When it just for the night, we could care less about personality, just willingness.
