I have already discussed this issue with my childern, and they know that my choice for myself would to stop all artificial means of keeping me alive and let any useable organs be donated. I have always been very independant and would hate to be kept alive in a totally dependant state while useable organs died slowly.

If the brain is not functioning, then death has basically already occurred. The only thing keeping the person alive is mechanical, and the longer that person is maintained that way, the harder it is to remove him from the machines. What if it were you being forced to exist without quality of life? Would you really want to be kept "alive" just so your loved ones can torture themselves with a hope that is beyond hope? I don't. That's why I have a living will stating that when I am so damaged, keep me alive only long enough so that parts of me can be taken and given to someone who will live longer and better because of me. Then let me go. I have also made copies of this will and given it to everyone in my family and to some friends so everyone is clear as to what I want. Even though you have a living will, a hospital can't call in a harvest team without the family's consent. I hope your question is just a hypothetical one, but if not, I am sorry about your loved one.

Family and friends should say goodbye and let them go! I'm a ccu nurse and have seen people on vents with temporary pacemakers forever. Organ donation is an option that should be considered. Its really inhumane to let someone linger for a long time even if they are brain dead. What is the purpose???

Keeping them alive by artificial means is so very selfish on our part. My Mom wants the plug pulled if she is ever in that situation. I would have a hard time doing it, so I told her I would "trip" over the cord and unplug it that way.

I believe that it is up to God when He wants to end a life. I recommend to someone that is in this situation to do a lot of praying. And remember, Jesus comforts and soothes broken hearts.

Well if it happened me. I want my family to turn of the life supporting machine. I know it hard for any family to make that decision. I hope I never have to make this decision one day.

I am a Buddhist. When it happened to my dad we pulled the plug. It was the right thing to do. If it happens to me; my family knows to do the same thing.
