Not everybody celebrates Christmas! The Jewish have the day off automatically, but they don't celebrate Christmas so why not go watch a movie? As for the atheists and so on. Plus, there are families who maybe do things different. First Christmas after we moved cross-country we attended a movie cause we had no family or friends to celebrate with!!

In my opinion, it is somebody's dumb idea to capitalize on the fact that most everyone would definitely have that day off and figured, 'hey, instead of family and friends spending some quality-time together visiting, TALKING, and doing things together, lets make tons of money luring people to come and sit in a darkened theatre watching movies..

because "celebrating christmas" in the end just means a whole lot of people sitting down watching tv.

Maybe for the people who are all alone or whose families are acting up, so they can have something to do.
And for the non-Christians, so they can have something to do while the stores and restaurants are closed.
The movie industry is so unselfish and kind, this must be the reason. What else could it be?

actually a lot of families celebrate on christmas eve, then spend time with family...and sometimes they have nothing to do but go to the movies. they probably cater to this crowd.

Because it's something families can do together, especially considering most things are closed.
