Is there a point to the chinese girl in the move "Donnie Darko"?

I understand almost everything in that movie. In fact, its one of my fav. I love how everything happens for a reason. The only thing I donnot understand is the chinese girl. Is there a purpous to her in the movie, or is she just another charactor for us to laugh at and feel bad for..?

it almost seems as though she knows what donnie is going through and about time travel...maybe she even heard voices (why she wore earmuffs all the time) she seems to understand more than most yet is unplugged from those around her.

But I think Sharina's (sp?) role was basically to bring to light the shallowness that surrounded Donnie. Except for a few people (Gretchen, the two teachers) everyone was pretty self absorbed, even his two best friends.

She wasn't a major plot point, but something that added a little extra to the story.

I love that movie :)

I love that movie too, although I haven't seen it for a while. Probably time to watch it again.

I kind of thought that if she had a particular point, it was for her to be there for the part where Donnie tells her it's going to get better for her. That line demonstrated that Donnie both knew that he was in a string of events that was going to "disappear," and also that he had some depth and compassion.

Great movie.

I think the point of her role is that although she had a hard time at school and in life, she could go to sleep at night knowing she was a good person, where as for example, Patrick Swayze's character is praised and idolised in his everyday life, but when he goes home at night, he cries himself to sleep knowing he is a bad person.

I think the idea is not everything is what is may seem at first glance.
