Huh! You Aussies are very adventurous lot.
$5 is as good as nothing so you'll have to rely on other
people's generosity 100%. That's mighty tough odds if
you want at least some measure of personal safety and comfort during your trip. You've probably already figured this out but
the major costs associated with any travel is transportation,
lodging and food. You can probably count on the long-haul truckers to pick you up as you hitchhike. I would adivise against this because you may wind up assaulted, raped and/or murdered. This is reality, not a reality travel show. Your friends and family will be incredibly upset and saddened to hear that you went on a silly bet and died in some hole halfway around the world. You have to get a reasonably sane plan to get you across the states.
Lodging is more doable, because with a little research on the internet, you can find people all across the US (and the world) who are willing to provide a free night or two to a complete stranger. Look up
http://www.couchsurfing.com and that should help you out.
As for food, there's another incredible odds stacked against you.
Even on a basically straight iteniary in a private car, it takes about 3-4 days to travel across the continent. At the minimum, you will need to spend at least $10 per day to keep you calorized and hydrated. What are ya gonna do? You don't want to wind up getting admitted to a hospital in the middle of nowhere because you didn't find anyone to provide you with at least one meal per day.
I really commend your adventurous and fun-loving spirit.
Before you decide to test your bet, do a lot of looking up information on your alternatives and hooking up with other like-minded people in the US who can look out for your welfare while you're here. Spontaneity can be exhilerating but please be careful!
Good luck! Kiss kiss!

Oh, you can do it mate; it's just a matter of how long it will take, and how bad you want to do it. Basically, the $5 is worthless--it's gonna buy you your first couple of snacks and then you're broke. Your best bet is to hitch-hike, and your best chance of getting a ride will be from longhaul truckers. Try to look cleancut--or at least not too psycho. You could get lucky with these rides and get one that will cover a couple or three states at a time. As far as food: your best bet is to stop at a restaurant or diner or gas station or somewhere and ask tell them what you are doing. Most Americans love Aussies. Ask them if you can wash dishes for an hour or so for a meal. Try to take the southern routes through the lower states because it will be warmer in case you have to sleep outside. Good luck, and have fun!

You could fly inexpensively as an airline courier. You give up your checked luggage space, and the courier service uses the space to ship packages. You are allowed whatever carry-on luggage the airline will let you bring. You may not be able to do it for $5, but it will be for sustantially less than a regular flight.

Slim to none, unless you panhandle or beg for handouts. On your own, there's no way to make $5 take you across the country. If you beg and steal, maybe you'll get there, maybe not. Personally, I say you don't have a hair on your a s s if you don't go for it. Here's some advice, though...do it in January, there are less cops out!!

Yes, you can but Drummer Boy is right, keep to the southern states as much as possible. The weather is warmer and the people too. (I should know.) Not many tourists through here so people will be interested and help you out. Southerners are the best cooks too.

Technically no. Somtimes they have mistake fares for 0US dollars, but throw in the airport tax and fees, and your already over 5 bucks.

On $5 US, you have to be kidding.
You might be able to hitchhike, but what are you gonna do for food?
