if you really want a pet probably your mums not going to agree with a lizard there costly time consuming they have to be well maintain you have to find a reptile vet in your area which are very costly frogs are a bit different from lizards are you prepared to spend time and a lot of money on it these things are not cheap the heating and the lighting alone are not cheap as you do need special equipment to ensure your pets healthy also most reptiles carry salmonella on there skin so hygiene is a must when handling them but 9if i was you id tell her how much your willing to spend time with this animal come to an agreement with her like you ll do extra chores around the house maybe you ll do the one thing that she hates doing the most that's how my daughter got around me when she wanted a pet

hmhmm.... i see your plight. btw, your never supposed to just take an animal from outside and keep it as a pet. it could have disease, poison, bacteria, etc. i agree with your mother on the fish thing... if you're not going to put enough time on the water quality in the fish's tank, youre screwed with fishes...
lizards are definitely cool. you can play with them and such. just make sure you don't get ones like iguanas that can grow to 3 ft. in length. bearded lizards are popular and friendly. they dont grow as large as the iguana and will do fine indoors.
however, never keep lizards outdoors (in case they grow too big and you have to build them an enclosure). enclosures will only work for tortoises and such. lizards can climb out through chicken wire and even stone blocks.

I answered your dog question earlier (totally on your mom' side), but this seems likea reasonable reach. My biggest piece of advice is to pose it like this......
"Mom, if I found a pet that you wouldn't have to see, or smell, and I bought all the stuff to keep it, could I get it?"
If you buy all the stuff you need for a lizard, then the lizard, keep the terrarium in your room, and make sure it is clean and healthy, then she just may agree.
Good luck!

If you are going to get a lizard i wouldn't recommend getting one that eats crickets or anything live for a first lizard. Some lizards eat fruit and veggies....thats a bit easier to handle, and your mom might not find that as disgusting.

Do you know what goes into taking care of a lizard and the costs? I'd keep asking for a dog. And I wouldn't try to take any animal from the wild and keep it captive. That's cruel.

Keep pushing for the dog or a cat...push hard enough but not to make them mad.
Once they start talking about responsibility or work or smell or whatever, you have their attention and then say, ok, what about a lizard. No noise, low maintenance, low cost, etc...
You have to SELL them on the idea, but start out on a pet you KNOW you are not getting and then back off to an easier idea for them to accept ;-)

Hold strong to your desire for a dog...keep asking (nicely) She'll weaken eventually-especially if you show her picures/websites of all the dogs that need homes from animal shelters. Manipulative but so what? Dogs need homes.
don't compromise with a lizard...you'll never get a dog.
