American authors only, huh? The following books are definitely not like Huck, but they are good stories by Americans.

"The Codex" by Douglas Patterson is a great story. Three brothers have to search for their father, who has taken his fortune with him to the grave. Now if they want to inherit anything they must find his treasure tomb.

"The Hunt For Red October" by Tom Clancey is a good spy/military story.

"Why Me?"and "Don't Ask" by Donald Westlake are comedy crime capers set in New York during the early to mid 1980's.

Pick just about any Tony Hillerman book featuring Jim Chee or Joe Leaphorn for a good mystery. Hillerman's descriptions and attention to the details of Navajo culture is quite impressive.

Elmore Leonard is another modern master, but most of his stuff is a bit beyond the high school level. "Touch" is a great story about a former missionary who can heal people. He is trying to hide from the world as a rehab councilor when his secret come to the attention of a former tent revival preacher. This is not for everyone's tastes, especially the devout Roman Catholics out there. Other good books by Leonard include "Rum Punch" (a.k.a "Jackie Brown") and "Riding The Rap" (my personal favorite of his).

Even though you'll hear this from a lot of teen girls about twilight I would like to say I'm not a crazy fan but anyways in the last book I like how Stephenie Meyers kinda hints that they are having sex but not describing it. It's really romantic how it just all fades. I think if anything only the emotional aspects on sex should be written but it depends on what audience you are going for which would be best if you went for all because more people would read it but anyways try reading some of the scenes where it just fades. It's very romantic.
