I need help. I have looked into many different aspects of the field and am really interested in becoming an orthopedic surgeon. The problem is, due to special circumstances I had to drop out of school and attain my GED. This is not because I am stupid so I have the brain capacity to enter the field. However, I must attend a community college before I can major in Pre-Med at a 4 year school. I have no idea where to start, or what classes to take at the community college. Please Help.

The best thing is to work closely with a transfer advisor throughout your academic career at the community college. The grades are extremely important. Sometimes, a community college has the beginnings of a pre medical or pre allied helth program major to offer to its students. I recommend before you meet with the transfer advisor that you have a couple of colleges or universities in mind, so it could help you have the most courses hit the graduation checklist for courses towards the major. Also, you might want to get involved with the local Shriner's organization in your volunteer work because part of what their organization does is in the field of orthopedics. Good luck!

Well, you will take general classes first. All your pre-reqs, but you need to take some nursing classes to get some history under your belt. You will learn a lot! My husband is in nursing school and works for a brand new Ortho Center for St Vincent Hospital in Indy! Get as good grades as you can because the better you do in your community college, the better your chances are in getting into a pre-med school! Good luck! I admire you for living out your dream and going back to school! I'm also in school to finish my BA in accounting! School is a lot of work, but it all pays in the end...No pun intended! LOL
