Its a mixture of both. "God" is a non conscious being, not some old git with a beard living in heaven, "god" is your subconscious and mine and everyone combined, so the only way it can communicate is through ideas put into your mind which you interpret.
When communicating to primitve people the only way they could understand was with how they understood the world at the time and that was with gods such as the greek gods etc so of course much of it comes off as fantasy yet the basic principles are true.
Jesus was prophecised as a false prophet which he was, like a self fulfilling prophecy. Heaven and hell do not exist they are just misinterpretations of an ideal, just imagine what the world would be like if people were not so terrifed of hell they would smash into a building in a bid to avoid it and secure their place in heaven? Imagine Ireland if they were not fighting over who had the real god? No more silly hats for the jews, no more silly rituals, no more silly costumes for the muslims and all the other primitive naive nonsense.
Very few if any people actually believe in god, they just convince themselves that they do because they have been brainwashed into believe that they will receive a reward if they do, and punisment if they dont.

Religion is all about the fear of death, and the human obsession with immortality, anyone that says otherwise is just in denial.

Well woody allen says " Not only is there no God, but try getting a plumber on weekends." But in the words of Fisher Ames "No man ever did or ever will become truly eloquent without being a constant reader of the Bible, and an admirer of the purity and sublimity of its language.W. C. Fields, "A lifetime agnostic, was discovered reading a Bible on his deathbed. "I'm looking for a loop-hole," he explained.

Reality, more than that, the truth. Men wrote the Bible, but God is the author. Its like when you are writing, you are the one that have all the stuff, your pen is just the tool.

It's definitely both, I look at it kinda like Aesops Fables. The point of the stories are definitely real, but the stories themselves, probably not.
