I had a Beta fish or whatever and I overfed it it looked like it was sleeping so my mom cleaned the bowl and nothing happened. How do I know it's still alive?

First off while betta's can survive in a bowl it is not advised to do so. All fish really require a filtration system of some sort for the best health of the fish.

As for over feeding it is possible that the extra food simply "poisoned" the water by breaking down into high levels of ammonia which is toxic to fish.

You should never feed your fish more food than they can eat in 10-20 seconds with no food left in the tank. This is especially true of fish kept in small tanks or bowls.

You should see the gills moving if the betta is still alive.

Simply, yes. In the long run, the fish could get disorders and diseases. One such is known as Swim Bladder Disease. Another way your fish could die by being overfed is through all the waste your fish creates. This can be very toxic to your fish, the smaller the tank the smaller the worse it will be. Point? Dont overfeed your fish. Only feed your fish as much as it can consume in a few minutes (daily).

Bettas should only be fed an amount the size of their eye once daily. Over feeding can result in injury or illness and yes death. Being in a bowl i bet the water is too cold. Bettas liketo have water 78 - 80F and definately not below 75F. If you touch the betta and he doesn't move he's dead, watch his gills to see if they are moving (if he's breathing). he may have gotten to cold and "frozen" to death.

no a fish will not die from being over fed. fish will stop eating if they are not hungry anymore. you are just going to end up with a lot of left over food in your tank. as long as they eat it all and no food is left at the bottom than your fine. just make sure their is no food at the bottom since left over food in the tank could decompose and could affect your water levels. if you are feeding your fish a lot make sure you check your levels just to be on the safe side. when food decomposes in your tank it can bring your nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia up

our Beta did this sometimes and freaked out my kids.

give it a tap and if he moves he is fine...
although if he KEEPS doing this he could be sick (like ours)
and one day he didn't move.

Yes, the thing will over eat, the food does sink but they will find it.
Just a tiny pinch is enough.

When knew ours was really dead when the last time we look his eyes were 'grey' looking.

i have one too. if you feed it too much it will try to eat everything and fish can literally die from extreme over eating. only feed it a few pieces that are small enough for him to eat.

the extra fish food will sink to the bottom and rot - and who knows what lives down there

Is it on its side flowing on top of the water, that is how you know it is dead. Just give it a little pinch each day.
