Unless you were asked to bring a covered dish, I wouldnt, if you were invited to dinner then the dinner has already been planned. A bottle of wine is what most people bring, which means someone else will probably do that too. A dessert is a nice idea, or if you want to be different.. how about something from bath and body works for the host to relax in after she has prepared a dinner all day long.

Wine is the obvious choice. But i think wine can be a bit mundane. You could spend over half an hour selecting a choice wine. Then when you get to the dinner your host puts your special selected wine amongst the numerous others basically into oblivion. Its better to be original a single malt whiskey would definitely impress a male host. But if you want to be neutral I would bring a classic game "twister" springs to mind and is always interesting after a view drinks. I would stay away from food you don't want to tread on anyones toes. Enjoy your party.

You should always inquire first if there is something specific that you are needed to bring. If not then I would agree that a bottle of wine would be an excellent choice. Also any type of dessert whether homebaked or bought from a bakery would be a great addition as you can never have too many desserts on Christmas!

A good bottle of wine, godiva chocolates, and an ornament for their tree is what I always bring. Although, sometimes I do substitute a small Christmas cactus plant in lieu of the ornament.

nothing unless you were ask to bring something. and if you want to bring something than ask the dinner party host giver if they would like for you to bring something, maybe a gift to the host. Or a Christmas movie that will be entertaining to the guess.

There is a GREAT recipe from food network, Paula Dean's recipe, Gingerbread Pumpkin Trifle, its very delicious, easy to make, and will IMPRESS them. Even if you can not cook, you can NOT go wrong with this recipe. All you have to do is to be able to make a gingerbread from a mix, make up some cook pudding, a few more simple steps, and you have a dessert that is fit for a king, seems like you are a master chef, and you will have them clamoring for the recipe!

You could call the host and ask if they need anything. If they don't, you can choose something yourself. A dessert is nice, an assortment of cookies, or a bottle of wine if people drink. If they do not, a nice bottle of sparkling cider (like Martinelli's) might be welcome.
