I have heard the expression monkey wrench and even a left handed monkey wrench and never knew just what kind of wrench it is or just where it got the name. The only thing I have thought of was a wrench from Montgomery wards store.

A Monkey Wrench is an adjustable-type wrench and the name is believed to be derived from a variation or mispronunciation of the name of the inventor, Charles Moncky, a Baltimore mechanic.
The wrench, or variations of it, is also known as a Pipe Wrench or a Stilson Wrench.

A Monkey wrench is an adjustable wrench. It has a spiral part just below the business end of the wrench where it grips and turning it adjusts the size of the wrench to fit the nut or whatever you're using it for. I don't know why it's called a monkey wrench except that mechanics were often called "grease monkeys" and used those wrenches.
