Just to dwell on an old topic, this incident was a huge dissapointment, what with the actions themselves, and the unfair punishments handed out by David Stern. This wasn't Ben Wallace or Ron Artest's fault, but it was the idiot fans in Detroit, alcohol, and bad security that caused this.

Here are some videos of the brawl:

I don't know how you can blame anyone but Ron Artest. The actions on court between Artest and Wallace were nothing more than a couple of aggressive guys not backing down and was broken up effectively by the officials. The fan was out of line when he threw the cup, but if Artest points the guy out he is immediately removed from the arena and the problem would have been solved. Instead Artest does the unthinkable and leaves the court into the stands and begins to assault people. Of all the things that happened that is what started the melee. The subsequent actions by the other Pacer players were also inexcusable. Once Artest broke the invisible barrier between fans and players all bets were off. If he never goes into the stands the brawl never happens. Many many fans drink to much at many sporting events and brawls don't happen.

its hard to put the blame on one person. but i believe that ben wallace got off easy. he instigated the fight by shoving artest. besides that drunk who threw the beer not only started one of the worst riots in sports, he ruined ron artest's already unstable career and because of that one move, the great reggie miller never won a ring.
