monsters!!
haha i think its mostly the "unknown" that makes all of us scared of the dark!

I would say it's the lack of senses, and sight is very poor (unless you are a X-man) in the dark but still we can catch some shades and shadows and the subconscious mind has plenty of legends, myth and tales about monsters so that probably doesn't help
Hourray for Pixar Monsters Inc, they probably made many children less scared of their closet at night!!

Just a thought, but who's to say we're avoiding looking at anything? Perhaps there is nothing in the dark and that is precisely why we look elsewhere - we want to see something.

Nothing - same things that dwell in the light. Jus the dark makes our senses more aware almost like a blind person is more aware with their other senses.

We can look into the dark, but there's not much to see since it's dark so why bother. Does that answer your question?

most live in darkness and don't see it because it is hard to see in the dark!

Lack of control. Our sense of sight gives us the most control of all our senses. When it's numbed we lose that control.
Horror movies may also help.
