If it's a small aquarium try a milk jug or juice container that measures to 1 gal. (it should say on the jug) I have a 55 gal, so i bought a 10 gal storage box. I measured out 5 gal with a milk jug and marked the storage container at the water level. Now I just fill my storage box to the 5 gal mark. It's faster than trying to fill a 55 gal aquarium with milk jugs. I wouldn't get a container any larger, as 5 gal of water is heavy to carry.

Multiply the length by the width and then by the height (all in inches). Divide the total by 231 and that will be the approximate gallons of your tank.

( length * width * height ) / 231
This is done in inches using the inside dimensions of the tank for the most accurate measurement.

Try using an empty milk jug. Empty the tank and then fill it with the jug. Record how many times you used the jug and then do the math.
