what verb would you use to describe the action of someone who uses all his strength and tries his best to pass through a quagmire?

It could be

endeavor- to try very hard

or

toil, drudge, labor, plod, pine away, exert, grind

or even attempt or strive

It's hard to find the word. My guess is that you have a specific word in your mind that you are looking for. So, you may end up being the one to figure it out!

By the way, I love the fact that you used the word "quagmire" in your question. It is a very appropriate, yet underused, word. Awesome!
