If it's cotton or dry the cloth may not iron without moisture. So, having a steam iron, a good one works well and you don't have to sprinkle. If you have just a plain iron, little steam you can spray or sprinkle and my my udes to wad the clothing up to distribute the moisture and let it sit for a while, then iron . This was a long time ago but still works. You can also just throw the cloth in the dryer with a wet cloth to moisten it then iron. The point is to have the material moist to have the wrinkles iron out. So, do it right before itoning. Good luck.

if the clothes you are ironing are slightly damp they will iron better as the steam produced by a hot iron and water will spread out and get rid of some of the wrinkles, i know we have steam iorns now but i still keep a spray bottle near my ironing board, if im doing my quilt blocks i want to make sure all the seams are as crisp as i can make them and nothing works like spraying that seam with water before pressing.

Theres a real science at work when you sprinkle water on clothes while ironing. The rapid disapation of moisture from the fabric actually causes the fabric to shrink, smoothing out those unsightly little wrinkles.
Isn't science wonderful?
I think its very cool that you were ironing and thought about this question and went to the trouble to go online and ask it.

the textile being iron desires no starch for water to assist in ironing out wrinkles, the water erupts into steam at the same time as touched with the help of the nice and cozy iron, the steam relaxes the fibres of the textile and extra warmth instruments them in a flat position.

sprinkle (it's actually better to use a spray bottle, so you can mist) then iron. the steam gets out the wrinkles.

This creates steam and when you apply steam to your clothing this loosens the fibers of your clothing and then applying a hot iron this straightens those fibers as it dries.
