Very very simple and easy !

Simply drive your car to Auto Zone and ask the people to check your service engine soon light.

They have a handy tool it will plug into your car computer diagnosis port under your steering wheel.

All that is dealership quality of info and service, but it is always free from Auto Zone.

They are nice folks. Not sure about other auto parts place.

service light means either you need a regular scheduled maintenance or your emissions system has an error.... sometimes your fuel cap isn't shut to the 'clicking' point. If you fill up and turn the cap so it clicks a few times, you may not see the light after a few starts (needs to build up vacuum) . Generally not a 'dangerous' sign, but should seek attention if it persists.

It could possibly have put a code in the computer that can be read with a scan tool. Mechanics where I live check this for free. If it doesn't come on again then I would not worry to much. If their is a problem then it will come on again.

i wouldn't say its a false alarm,it could be something going bad but not completely bad yet. i don't know if i would take it to the shop right away.

Just take it to an oil change place. Get their preminum service. (30 or forty bucks) It's probably an O2 sensor, no big deal.

go to your mechanic and tell him what happened. It should come on when starting up and then cancel out after the car is running.

maybe its caused by the lub-oil's level, its just a guess(unbalance ground may cause it if your motor lub-oil is on the low side). maybe lub-oil is low. try checking yourself is the lub-oil low(check by using dip-stick). if its low? fill it up.
