As with any highly populated area of any large urban entity, Chinatown can be tempting to pick-pockets and the like, but mostly you will see everyday people either going about their business or are tourists, just like you.

Some say that San Francisco's Chinatown is the largest Oriental settlement outside Asia. I lived around it for years. The main street for shopping is Grant from Bush to Columbus. There are dozens of stores of all types there. I have not been in New York's Chinatown for years, but the one in SF was much better when I was in both. Union Square is just south of chinatown, and North beach is just north of it.

My parents used to take us kids to Chinatown when on summer vacations from the Midwest, and I too have many fond memories of that exotic city-within-a-city in San Francisco. It's one of the many reasons why I always said that someday SF CA would be where I'd live when I grew up. And not only is Chinatown still charming & perfectly safe for tourists, I have lived in 'the city by the bay' for almost 20 years now . . .

It's safe as you want it to be. If you act like an idiot, expect to be treated as one. If you behave normally, you won't have any problems. Yes there is crime in Chinatown just like any other place in the world, even where you live! So go and have fun. Respect the people, and the millions of other tourists and you will fit right in.

That's a bunch of malarkey. Sounds like the kind of closed-minded prejudice you hear from middle-class suburbanites who don't like city life anyway.
I live in the city and walk through San Francisco's Chinatown on my way to the office every day. It is full of happy tourists all the time, and it is perfectly safe. Our Chinatown is huge and very culturally rich, and we love having this area in the middle of our city and love having Chinese culture permeate everything we do. Just like any other area in any major city, you will see homeless people and you can't do stupid things like flash a wallet full of money around, but that's just common sense.
