This person knows that their views are unreasonable yet they are attached to their feelings which classify things as completely one way or the other. So if a person steals from this person their physical characteristics and mannerisms will forever be classified with thievery so any person who is even remotely like this thief will be classified as such and never trusted. How does a person who thinks like this allow themselves to see the beautiful gray areas within which people’s individuality resides?

It really depends on why the person is seeing in black and white. The black and white thinking is almost always a defense, so it is most important to look for the source of the defense rather than the symptom of black and white thinking.

Often times certain personality disorders cause this sort of perceptual stance. If that is the case it is very difficult to change and it would not be useful to point it out to the person because they have great difficulty reflecting on their own behavior and their effects on other people. If instead the cause it just habit or the way they were raised than it can be helpful to look for the cause of the polarized thinking and at address it at it's cause. For example, if the person is using black and white thinking to protect themselves from a very harsh inner critic (e.i. if I see myself as at all bad I am unlovable) then the solution would be for the person to build a more loving self-talk. If the cause is depression than the depression needs to be addressed, etc.

Generally, I find the best way of doing so is to try to understand from the oppositional viewpoint. This can be done by frequently attempting to play devil's advocate in debates, so as to force yourself to a viewpoint which you would normally see as incorrect. Another way to support this is to read books written by those of an oppositional viewpoint, in order to at least understand where they are coming from.

I tend to see EVERYTHING as grey area, with little black and white, since I believe it is a more realistic assessment of the world in which we live. There is NO true evil, and NO true good in the world, but merely a blend of behaviorilism (watson), and upbringing (Freud). In other words, in every subject circumstances dictate. Of course, even in this, there are exceptions. I personally do not ever support rape, pedifilia, or bigotry in any way shape or form. On the other hand, murder, abortion, economics, extortion, mistruths, and religion are driving topics in the world in which we live, which can often be justified on a situational basis.

you have to allow your self to trust.you are probably that way because you only have one understanding you only judge and make judgment and don't believe in change.it's hard to take in a person and take change being that, that person only allowed you to see so much.it's not wrong for you to feel the way you feel it's just some time you have to step outside the box to get an understanding! it's always something behind everything somebody do and you have to be willing to take that step into seeing what that something is.and then that's when you will be able to see life in COLOR.TRUST

The only way to see gray areas is to constantly question yourself. Socially speaking, there are no absolutes, so if you ask yourself "Is my opinion undeniably true?", of course you'll realize it can't be. Other than that I recommend connecting deeper with positive people who are very different from you. Also unleash some of that unexpressed creativity. Good luck!

This person probably needs to look within to see his own imperfections and mistakes. If he is able to tolerate his own imperfections, and if he hopes that others are able to offer that tolerance to him when necessary, then he should learn to extend that to others.

If he is unable to do that, then he should live the limited life that is afforded to the intolerant.

That's entirely up to them. It's something buried deep in their subconscious thought-processes that can't be affected by anyone except the person themselves, unfortunetely.

You don't!
Wanting to change someone to "see the gray" only makes you to be the one that sees things to be black and white.......right?!
