As the mother of 4 teenagers and 3 "tweeners" I absolutely agree that it's from puberty. They are all experiencing such drastic hormonal changes that there's no wonder the act as they do. I try to be understanding with my kids but under no circumstances do I allow them to behave badly or disrespectfully because of it. I just talk to them about what is going on and I try to give them skills that help them handle the mood swings or whatever else it is that they are going through. I know that they are wonderful children who are going through the process of becoming wonderful adults and I also try to remember what it was like when I was their ages. I just love them, try to understand them and set limits for them and make sure I follow through with them if they don't stay with in those limits.

The coming of age teenager goes through so many changes. Their bodies are constantly changing. Things happening they may or may not know the reasons for. Puberty brings body changes, pimples, raging hormones, the want to fit in, the need to grow up now, the sadness of being too old for some of the fun things they liked to do, the stress of higher grades, drugs, sex, alcohol, friends, parents, jobs, planning futures and I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. Kids (teenagers) deal with so much in such a fast pace that it is no wonder they become impulsive with their emotions and actions. The short answer to your question is, "Yes, I think this comes mainly from puberty." Or at least it starts there...I think society plays a major role as well. A lot of teens want the responsibility that comes with growing up, but no longer realize that needs to be earned and if they do realize it...well, that doesn't matter because they feel it is owed to them....we need to simplify our adult lives before we can expect teens to destress or simplify theirs.

Yes of course, its only natural for teenagers to gossip about what is happening in school, they want to be dramatic, and enthusiastic about gossip! Most teenagers only have school to talk about because they dont have much else to talk about other than celebrity gossip and the latest things! As they mature they learn to talk about more mature subjects, maybe turning on the news every once in a while will help them to shift away from the gossip.

Liminality.
Teenagers are negative and impulsive because they are confused. And they are confused because they do not have a societal role. They are not children, they are not adults--both of which have very defined rules on how to behave. Teenagers are not expected to act childish and immature, but they are not expected to shoulder the responsibilities of adulthood. In the liminal period, no rules apply, yet we expect them to abide by rules.
I think teenagers' difficulties are caused by our society moreso than puberty. Look at other cultures and societies thoughout the world--they do not have the same "teenager" problem that we have.

i think conformity and trying to fit in makes kids depressed and emotional. also, kids tend to wear mask around different people, parents friends, teachers, and other people they dont know well.

It may also be because of the stereotype image of a teen as well.
