Growing plants. Plant roots help to loosen and aerate the soil but still keep it together. That is why deforestation is often a cause of desertification (the process of desert creation). With no plants to keep the soil together, the fertile humus, organic matter (if there is any left), and topsoil get blown away, sometimes causing humongous sandstorms (for example, the great Dust Bowl of the American 20's).

Anything that helps the dacteria in the soil not die and live better. I bet there is a chemical that could help this process and someone out theres working on finding it. Just like you might spray plants to keep pests off there possibly could be something that you could spray to help the soil not erode. Hopeful this chemical doesnt cause cancer or something else tho cause ya never know how things will react in a given system 4 sure.
