As far as I know he never was. He was dishonorably discharged from the military for disobedience. He was also known to drink heavily and use opium. He became infamous for his erratic, and many believed unstable, behavior.

It seems I heard a story about vagrants breaking into his home at night to sleep, so he rigged a shotgun under the window they were using to break-in. It killed a vagrant and he was charged with the crime, but aquitted. Now that you have me curious, I m not finding anything about it, so I may have remembered it wrong.

no he was not. He wrote a story about it but it never really happened. If you want some extra info he died of insanity and drinking acholol.

No, he only wrote about it, don't ask me how he knew so much about the subject. As far as history goes, I never heard of him killing anybody.
