You don't really know how your pain tolerance is going to be until you get there, so you should just go in with an open mind. You may find that non-drug pain relief methods are all you need, though it is a good idea to have thought about all your options.

Epidural has more risks for the mother than for the baby. It goes directly to the mother's spine, and doesn't really pass to the baby. Just remember that epidurals don't work on everybody and there may be circumstances that you wouldn't be able to get one.

Just keep your options open and make your decisions about pain relief as needed.

There are risks with everything when it comes to a baby, I had an epidural and everything ran smoothly, what helps you is breathing and thinking about what is going on with your body at that moment, and know that your a step closer to getting it over with. The doctor knows what he is doing ,as long as you dont move when you are getting the epidural you will be fine. I wish you the best of luck and reminding you that you CAN do this. It will only be for that one day that you will go through this.

Here are two realities you should consider:

1 - Women were havin' kids long before epidurls and they dealt with the pain just fine.

2 - Most women today have an epidural and they're kids do just fine.

Some doctors will allow you to start out without any meds and administer them if you really feel like you need them. I think you should go with that option.

the only real risk with epidurals is that it can slow down the birth the numbing makes it harder for muscles to work properly, nothing i have seen or heard, from talking to doctors, and looking online has ever indicated that an epidural can cause damage to the baby. good luck.

You know, I had the epidural with my two. The chances that it actually affects your baby is quite slim. I tried to go longer without it on my second, but I only lasted until 8cms. :)

Best thing to do is discuss it with your doctor and see what he/she thinks.
