Recognize what you are feeling, and understand the cause and effect before acting or speaking in that mode.
You want to make sure you are in a state of balance, i.e., not too extreme in any emotion, so you can make decisions with clear judgment. Especially when I feel a strong "negative" emotion, I try to stop myself and regain my focus before saying or doing something I may regret. To put things in perspective, I often remind myself (1) to blame the circumstances, not the people in it, and to remember that some problems are an echo of a something from the past that is being repeated until a lesson is learned or a conflict is resolved; (2) that for everything I think or feel, the other person in a situation is usually going through or feeling the same, since conflicts are mutual; especially if I feel judged or imposed upon, it is usually because the other person feels judged or pressured; and (3) to try to focus on the good in a person or in a situation, and look for ways to get there from here, that the same way problems or conflicts are mutual, so are solutions, which require an equal give and take by the parties involved.
For simple books that many people find helpful, I recommend Thich Nhat Hanh "Being Peace" and other publications. Most are so short, you can even read them at the bookstore or library.
Here are his "9 prayers" for meditating on extreme like or dislike in seeking a healthy balance:

Most people here seem to be finding other emotions to cover for the ones that would cause pain. That doesn't distance you from your emotions, just certain ones.
Flip a coin whenever you have to make a decision and don't worry if its bad or revel in the decisions that would be positive. Go through life doing the basics that would allow you to keep functioning as long as you want to keep functioning. In the case of decisions having to be made here, the process is - What do I have to do to make 'A' happen? Answer - I do 'B'. Basically its like. How do I stop being Hungry? I eat food. How do I ensure that I have electricity? I pay the bill.
A routine of these things should zap most of the emotion out of life. Why you would want to do that is beyond me, but good luck with it. (-:

Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. Then push past the emotions. Work hard at keeping level headed and stay focused on what ever task is before you. I
am a very emotional person. The older I get the worse
the condition. I just tell myself that I don't have time to
fall apart and I just have to do what I have to do.
Being a Katrina survivor I have learned to push past
the emotions and chose a better time to fall apart.

The only way to do that is to close off your heart to all emotions. But that can't be done. So, you find an outlet that will help you with the emotion you are dealing with at the moment. One that is right for you..
Think of what makes you happy,if you're sad..
If you're depressed,do as I do.Think of something that could be worst. Then, whatever you're dealing with, doesn't seem so bad after all.......Ladybug

When I am about to lose it, I count to 10, take a walk, and get calm. I also practice regular self examination and meditation. It helps me to remember that emotions are simply thoughts with physical sensations attached to them. That idea removes the baggage and reminds me that they will pass.

Observe social workers or animal control personnel, or law enforcement.
You learn the hard way that you cannot take you're work home with you or you lose your only sanctuary.
