E Coli comes form the lower gut of mammals. These stains of bacteria are so common that almost every mammal has it living inside of them, including YOU!
E Coli is a very common bacteria that lives in the lower intestine of many mammals. It only harms a few people and mammals. Most people and mammals get a stomachache for a few days and the bacteria is countered by the body's defenses. After that the bacteria grows in the gut and is then elimiated in feces. Since people eliminate E Coli when they go to the bathroom Water Treament Plants have to work hard to kill them. They use various chemicals or boil the water. It is a very common and hardy bug so it easily enters the ecosystem. The cases of E Coli that have recently made the news seem to come from cattle, where their feces runs into the field and infects the plants. It can't do much inside a plant, but when it gets inside mammals it starts to breed and multiply like crazy. It is present in most people without harming them, but there are many stains of the disease and when someone gets a foreign strain (like from a cow or other mammal) it can be very serious and even deadly.
"The number of individual E. Coli bacteria in the feces that a human excretes in one day averages between 100 billion and 10 trillion, however the bacteria is not confined to this environment, and specimens have also been located on the edge of hot springs.
E. coli can cause several intestinal and extra-intestinal infections such as urinary tract infections, meningitis, peritonitis, mastitis, septicemia and gram-negative pneumonia."
In the case of tainted spinach the E Coli was in the water that the plants took in, so the E Coli couldn't be washed out, it was inside of the plant.
E Coli is so common that it is often studied by scientists since so much is known about it. In fact the Minotar Rocket launched this week is carrying a experiemnt with E Coli (http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/sfn_061216_tacsat2_minotaur.html) "GeneSat-1 is a compact satellite designed to study biological changes of microorganisms and mammalian cells at the gene/protein level."

cows have always produced e-coli but our bodies are able to handle those small amounts. now with all the hormones put into the cows they are producing more and that fertiliser is being used for crops so it is seeming into the plants and they are getting effected. and also the fertiliser run off into the local watering canals.

E coli is in the poop. If there is an animal farm near a vegetable farm and it rains, then runoff rainwater washes over the crops and there you go-Ecoli.

E. coli is a bacteria that has been around for a long long time.
The problem is that in recent years because of antibiotic use it has grown resistant to antibiotics and so is more dangerous.
