I know how to get a patent, but I probably can't aford it.

You need to find a manufacturer who will do prototypes. That's not cheap either, but ya gotta start somewhere! You could start with fabricators in your local Yellow Pages, then branch out by doing an internet search. If you can find one locally, you'll be able to oversee the process.

How do you get started on a prototype?

I'll tell you.

Go to a movie store and buy yourself the complete season of America Chopper from Discovery Channel.

Get inspired.

Get yourself some tools and materials.

Get your prototype to full functionality.

Study sales books.

You wouldn't sell Martin Luther King posters in China, would you?

Go where your product would sell most and network.

Either that or borrow like crazy and take a risk.

Simple as that.
