Back many years ago Republicans were the liberal party, and the Democrats were the party of the Conservative South, the party of Slavery, and the party of treason.
Cartoonist Thomas Nast got very famous saying the the Republicans would be like Elephants and never forget that the Right Wing Conservative Democrat Jackasses were still supporting slavery even after the Civil War, and creating the KKK etc
During the Depression the Republicans had no answers so Liberals took over much of the Democratic party and Elected FDR, who saved the country and created the basis for the most prosperous period in American history.
During the Civil Rights era the Conservative Southern Jackasses were such an embarrassment, that the Democrats finally cleaned up their act, and ended up driving the Jackasses to the Republican party that welcomed them, and threw out all the liberal Republicans.
So now the Elephants who would never forget have forgot why they had elephants as mascots, But the Democrats have embraced the Mule as plain, stubborn and "down home" .
And since the Republicans have forgot why they chose the Elephant, perhaps now they should choose the Hippocrat.

The most common symbol for the party is the donkey, although the party itself never officially adopted it.[31] The origins of this symbol are unknown, but several theories have been proposed. According to one theory, in its original form, the jackass was born in the intense mudslinging that occurred during the presidential race of 1828 as a play on the name of Andrew Jackson, the Democratic candidate. Jackson had been called "Andrew Jackass," and the defiant Jackson adopted the nickname.[citation needed]
On January 19, 1870, a political cartoon by Thomas Nast in Harper's Weekly titled "A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion" revived the donkey as a symbol for the Democratic Party (the symbol had also been used in the 1830s). Cartoonists followed Nast and used the donkey to represent the Democrats, and the elephant to represent the Republicans.

When Andrew Jackson ran for president in 1828, his opponents tried to label him a "jackass" for his populist views and his slogan, "Let the people rule." Jackson, however, picked up on their name calling and turned it to his own advantage by using the donkey on his campaign posters.

It was chosen by cartoonist Thomas Nast in the 1800's to represent the stubbornness of the party in sticking to 'old fashioned' ideas.' (Hard to believe but the Democrats used to be the 'conservative' party.)

it was used as a derogatory thing with Jackson, but it was eventually adopted as a pride thing. Same with the elephant for the republicans. It was originally an insult.
