The only reason they say it is bad is because some of the dyes have amonia. When you are pregnant you should stay away from these, so just look for one that doesn't have amonia.

I'm currently 23 wks along and have been dying my blond hair to brown all along. No problems. I have it professionally done and they only use dyes that don't contain any amonia or bleach, I checked and remind them everytime I go in. If I can't confirm the dye is free of those two things, I don't have it done. Feel free to be fussy. Also, they rinse and shampoo my hair twice after the dye is set to remove the excess dye from my scalp. My hairdresser did the same thing while pregnant with her 4 yr old son and he is perfectly fine.

The jury is out on whether your scalp is actually porous enough to allow any of the dye into your blood stream in lethal or toxic amounts. This may have been more of a concern years ago when they used much more harmful chemicals and ingredients in hair dyes.

As a hairdresser and a pregnant lady myself, I would say do what you feel comfortable with. If you are REALLY worried about it, I would recommend highlighting as the bleach does not have direct contact with your scalp.

Congratulations to you!

Some of the warning labels caution against dying your hair while pregnant. If you are pregnant how long do you have to wait to actually dye you hair, 9 months at the most. Versus a lifetime of probable reactions. Its not like you will be pregnant forever.

As the first answer said, ammonia isn't good. And they recommend just hi-lites since there is no actual skin contact...but then again I have had 4 kids and have dyed my hair with all of them and they are all perfectly healthy and smart. There is no scientific proof (I know, looked it up as much as possible before I ever dyed my hair) that it can harm your baby, it's just a precaution. So if you decide to do it, be smart...in an open room with lots of fresh air.

I actually just recently called my obgyn for that very reason. They said that in the first 3 months, just don't use the dyes that will darken the hair. If you use the blondes, that's fine. After the 1st 3 months, it's all good. Good Luck!

I've always heard that it was not safe. I didn't dye my hair once while I was pregnant. I didn't want to take that chance of hurting the baby.

It's fine. Hair dye no longer has the chemical that hurts babies. Just make sure you are getting some fresh air while doing it.

I dyed my hair, my mother, my best friend, and so did her mother. Like one replier mentioned, some do have amonia and if you do decide to go ahead with it, you need to be in a well ventilated room because of the fumes.

No it is definitely is not safe! Hair dye is cancer-causing, and you really don't want to hurt your baby, do you?
