Of course it can explode...some malfunction in the battery might do weird things. But the chance of that happening should be just the same of an ipod exploding for no apparent reason.
Actually - playing it too much would hardly be a reason. I would rather imagine in to explode when overloaded i.e the battery being under heavy stress.

Explode, no. Overheat, yes. Any type of electronic system, if overused without rest, can potentially overheat to the point where the system will no longer work. Also, it could go one step further and catch on fire, but you would have to be using it for a long time without turning it off.
