http://www.limewire.com/ is the most used free file sharing site. make sure you have anti virus running before swapping any files. the free edition of avg available from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ does a good job. once you have installed limewire do a search for limewire pro. then install this and delete the original. pro is faster.

hey dude. You cant really make limewire download any faster.
You are restricted mainly by your internet bandwidth (maximum speeds your internet service provider will allow);
by the number of people you are downloading from and the maximum individual speeds they can give you (each person can only give you their maximum speed, and they might be uploading to other users too. so increasing the number of users you are downloading from tends to get u higher overall speeds);
and thirdly, by your firewall. (firewalls tend to slow down internet speeds but also enhance security.... i do NOT suggest turning ur firewall off, definitely not windows firewall anyways, because it doesnt affect ure downloads, but Norton or Mcafee or zonealarm do affect it)
and fourthly, to further develop point 2, i will add that you are downloading specific files. and only a few ppl in the world will have those specific files and be sharing them on limewire. therefore the number of people u can download from is limited, keeping your speeds a little low sometimes.
dont do anything illegal. If youre looking for freeware downloads or something look up www.download.com or www.softpedia.com or .net ive forgotten. or use Torrents to download files. A lot of large files such as free linux distributions can be downloaded through torrents
ADDED: try a bandwidth speed test here:

T1 should be fast enough. Can you afford a T3? I have a 512 kbps cable connection and find it good enough for Limewire. Incidentally have you read the latest BBC report that Limewire is one of the 6 most dangerous sites to let in spyware, malware and viruses? Bearshare is another one. So be careful!

It really all depends on how fast your computer is. Personally, my computer is really slow and I just downloaded limewire the other day. I got it before and it was really slow, and I think it was because I had the Pro. Try to uninstall it then install the 4.12 version.

You can do a free speed test (search for 'speed test') or contact your internet provider.

You'll have to upgrade to their PRO version. You'll have to pay a certain price for this though.
