Forget formatting. Just edit (re-size and create) the partitions directly with the appropriate utilities. Data remains intact.

Easiest way is with a Linux Live CD and the included PartEd program. Grab the Big Daddy ISO and burn it, from http://pclinuxos.com/ and set up things as YOU like.

An alternate (but it costs $) is Partition Commander. Other partition editing software products will be recommended.

Stay away from those editors requiring Windows to use, as they do not include a separate operating system (such as FreeDOS or Linux) and therefore can botch the edits like you are contemplating. Even Partition Commander offers to install itself under Windows. Don't do that. Just boot its CD and use it (FreeDOS is the OS). PartEd and Partition Commander use a GUI (graphical user interface).

Here's hoping you consider putting Linux on a third partition, and thus cut down on the world's spam load from Windows computers put on the Internet.

Good luck!

The best way is to use a partition manager. There are several good partition managers, including Norton Partition Magic and Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0. Unfortunately, neither of them are free.

You can use 3rd party software like Acronis Disk Director. It is easy in use and you won't lose any data after partitioning. Here is a full information: http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/diskdirectorsuite/

You should say what your goal is for doing this. I see no advantage or reason to do this? Contact Dell tech support.
