I'm taking a break from marking papers right now and I am soooo tempted to say something like, "So I won't fail you for giving me something that's incomprehensible."
But that's just the results of the last paper speaking and I'll get over it. :)
There are many reasons.
First, there are the pragmatic ones like people in authority say it's important and if I want to get ahead then I had better pay attention even if I don't like it. Now that answer stinks as far as I'm concerned but at the most basic level it does contain truth.
On a much higher level is the basic issue of communication. Listen to many people who try to convey an argument. If its filled with lots of 'likes' and 'uhs', or if the sentences just tail off into nothingness then you MAY get the basic idea but even if the person had a brilliant insight you probably will never find out what it is. It's extremely hard to hunt through poor communication in order to pick out the important things.
On still another level, the discipline of accurate writing inevitably adds discipline to one's thinking. Most people think better, deeper, and more clearly, when their thoughts are well-organized in a fashion that others can understand.
Hope this helps. All the best!

Being able to communicate effectively what you think or feel is very important in our society. You may be the smartest person in the world and have the most ingenious ideas, but if you can't put them down on paper so that others can easily understand what you are trying to say, you won't go very far at all. "Good writing" does not necessarily mean using big words or complicated sentences - more important is the ability to explain your thoughts in a coherent manner.

Writing is highly important since it developes communication skills along with the skills required to get the needed backround knowledge that is needed to write the specific piece. Being able to individually write on a subject will more easily reveal comprehension of the subject than many tests are able to.

The better you can write, the better you can communicate. The better you can communicate, the better you can get your opinions/ point of view across. This is good not only for you professionally (if you present good ideas at work, that looks good on you and you can move ahead) but in personal life you will need to be able to talk to people in order to see your point of view. The better you write, the better you will know how to verbalize your ideas and thoughts.

It seems to be that it is an indicator of how you think. Interestingly enough, people usually write the same way they talk as well. For example, my friend Suzanne talks a lot and when she writes, she has these really long run ons. It is good to have writing that is clear and straight to the point. People don't want to read extra gibberish.

One of the best examples of superior writing is Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Every word is carefully chosen in delivering a clear and succinct message. At this level of writing, one is capable of making a lasting impact on future generations and in shaping the course of history.

There are very few real jobs out there where you won't need to communicate with other people in your field about what you're doing. Every professional job requires writing skills.
