teenager commites suicide with grandfathers gun that had no lock

if the gun is legal, just having it does not prove negligence. you would have to prove that the grandfather was irresponsible beyond having the gun.

also, no one but the estate's representative (which will almost always be one of the parents) can bring the suit.

I guess it is too hard to blame the teenager. Do you not think the grandfather has enough guilt to deal with already? Being a teen, the person knew about what the gun was going to do when it was fired. It wasn`t like a small child having found it and was playing with it. If this person had not used this gun, then he/she would have found another one or another way to commit suicide.

If the teenager was under 18, many states have laws about minors having access to firearms.
The grandfather could be prosecuted either for that or for child neglect.

Wrongful death is a civil suit not a criminal charge. It is a possibility though.
