I am planning on getting the same license plate numbers and letters I have on my current plate engraved onto a European license plate, would this be illegal? The only thing that would be changing is the shape and size, but I would be putting on the registration sticker somewhere.

I think if you check with DVL/DMV you would find you have to have plates issued by the state. If everybody was allowed to use whatever style plates they liked, nobody would be able to tell what cars were registered and what ones weren't. People would have cardboard plates, cut metal of all shapes and colours, wooden plates, different fonts, etc. You don't have unique numbers, you know, just unique in your state. Shortly after I moved to Manitoba, before I switched my plates from my previous place, I was driving down the street and discovered a car from another province, driving behind me had the same plate number.

If you are a resident of California (lived there more that 60 days) you are required to register your vehicle in California. Then you will have California tags. If you drive with an out of state (or out of country) tags, expect to be stopped by the CHP. Unless you have a lame excuse, you will be warned and allowed to drive. If have lived in California more than 60 days and get stopped, I think it is a heavy fine ($250-$500).

I believe that counts as having an unauthorized license plate (not forgetting that such thing would look very trashy too.)
