i have a dsl connection and i want both my laptop and my desktop pc to use the same connection, what will i do, my laptop is wifi ready, im thinking of the cheapest way using cables in the mean time can i just use a splitter (similar to a phone connection) to split the dsl connection between them, and some person i asked said that direct cable connection can only have a max length of 6 to 7m is that true? what if i want the cable to be longer to reach my room. what are your suggestions, thanks

That will not work. You can not split an Ethernet signal. You are either going to have to purchase a small HUB or a wireless router to give Internet access to both the PC and laptop.

A direct connection uses the COM port on a PC, it will not allow for connection to a LAN. You can transfer files using HyperTerminal from PC to PC, that's about it.

First you need a router or a modem router in one, so that you can connect 2 pcs to broadband. then that router should have more than 2 ethernet ports at the back where you can connect 2 ethernet cables from your 2 computers. It is possible to have a very long ethernet cable so that it will reach your room. You need to call your Internet service provider tech support for other details.

well my internet broadband dsl modem supports up to 4 computers. this means 4 computers can share the internet connectivity, allowing me to use the internet with any one of the 4 coms. If you want to use cable connection for now, you might want to purchase a modem, otherwise a router, that allows multiple computers to connect to the internet at the same time. this will allow you to use both coms to connct to the internet. and no, there is no max length for the direct cable connection. however, should you want to extend your connection cable, you might have to pay your ISP some fee to extend the cable.

Why get a wire connection? Get a wireless router. You can connect the router to the dsl modem with the cable. You don't need a cable to connect the router to your laptop. That way, you can go anywhere in your house.
