So my brand new laptop says that I'm connected (signal strength excellent) to the internet. My moms laptop is plugged directly in (hers is old-no wireless), and hers is working. My laptop gets wireless when I'm away at school fine, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working here at home. It worked fine with my old laptop at home, but since I got this new one (over Thanksgiving break) I can't get it to work at home.

Suggestions?

I should add that my old laptop no longer works (thats why I bought the new one) so I can't go back and check anything.

The wireless connection is from my house, none of my neighbors have wireless, or if they do, I can never pick it up over here.

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I use wireless and My computer was saying that I was connected but none of the web pages were loading. I had to call the internet service provider and he helped me reset everything. It was quick and easy.

2 things to check right away. One is to make sure you are connecting to the correct wireless router. If you live in close proximity to other neighbors you might be accessing their wireless router instead of yours (it helps to create a unique name for your SID on the router). Second, your wireless profile might be set incorrectly for the router at home... example - Adhoc settings, 802.11B or G router, Network Infrastructure settings, WEP encryption, WAP settings. I would check out your old laptop to see how its settings are. Good luck!

you need to check if your wireless modem at home has a password. If it has a password and its not set on your pc you will not connect to the internet. That is what you call a WEP key. You need to enter this WEP key on your laptop. Check the bottom of your modem if there is WEP there. You need to call your internet tech support for other details.

When moving back and forth between locations there is some things you MUST do before your gonna get on the internet, if its saying connected, you might want to check your proxy settings in IE, go to tools, internet options, connections tab, then lan settings, make sure nothing is checked in there.

2nd, you will have to restart your computer if you havent already when jumping networks like this.

3rd, you might want to try this... go to start, run, then type in cmd. Now in this prompt, type, netsh winsock reset catalog let me know how it goes and good luck!

it could be a new security system that doesnt not allow the internet to work. there is some sort of a firewall i assume that is blocking you from the internet.
