Its hooked up right but I cant get it to work, a sometimes it works but sounds like crap and not all the distortions work.

There may be several causes for your pedal working improperly. If it's brand new, return it for another one.
If you got it used, it's possible that the chip is starting to malfunction, and you have to settle for whatever tones you can get. Chips are sensative to any impact, and on a stompbox it safe to guess it's been stomped hard.
If you have to buy a new pedal, try the Behringer V-Amp modeling series. Lots of amp/cab/pedal simulations that are easy to customize, and fairly cheap. Plus, you can stomp the **** out of the expression pedal and not damage the chip. Good luck..

bad cable or not grounded maybe on the inside of the cable or the box is fried on not grounded itself
