Depends on a lot of factors.
Was the check written to you?
Once you found out the check was bad did you contact the financial institution you deposited it to?
Did you return any of the money you got for cashing the check.
When you cash or deposit a check, you are responsible for that check clearing the bank. If it does not, you owe the money back to the institution.
If you make a reasonable effort to repay and really didn't know the check was bad, chances are strong you will not go to Jail.

I don't think that you will go to jail---i passed a bad check one time at a supermarket but that was because i forgot to enter a $50 gas purchase and i thot there was more money in my account than there was-----i had to pay returned check fees, negative account balance fees, and some other fines to my bank, all in all about $300 to my bank for a $50 check so i learned my lesson in a hurry! I think if you do it one time and it is not on purpose and it is not like thousands of dollars then you can settle with your bank! One of my old bosses at work said that he did go to jail one time for passing a bad check, though i don't know how many he has passed, how much the check was for or any other details.

A lot depends on the amount of the check. I wonder how you would not know a "big" check would not clear.
But anyway, first contact the place you wrote the check to and tell them you made an error. Then I would borrow and beg the amount of the check from any and all friends and relatives I could think of and get that check paid pronto. You can pay the people back you borrowed the money from over time.

What kind of check and how much? Did you cash the check at your bank? Did you deposit it in your account or Did you use a check cashing service! I need more info! And, yes you can go to jail it's call theft by check also depending on the amount it can be a felony! Also, you can get the person that wrote you the check in trouble go to the District Atty office in your county and but all the weight on them!
