probably the feeling they get when they do them...they also try and escape their problems or reality. And they'll be addicted to it and crave it at any cost.
Think of alcohol and bars, people love them because they can lose their inhibitions and feel different than what they normally feel.
Harder drugs is probably a more complex situation..i believe people do hard drugs because of the "high" and the escape reason.

Some people do drugs to escape..and then become addicted.

Addiction is actually classified as a mental or physical disorder.

But there is no real answer to why people do it. Some believe it to be social factors, and others believe it to be genetic.

I do not think that the human brain is understood enough to really have an answer to this. There are so many could be answers to this questions.

Perhaps the person is self medicating for a chemical imbalance in the brain, or they just truly hate their life and drugs are an easy out.

Because the feeling drugs give some people is better than reality. Personal I enjoy the occasional joint, doesn't mean I'm self destructing..... I hope not anyway

Because they do not want to face the misery of this world or of their own mind. They realize that this world is full of misery so they cover it up with drugs, alcohol, illicit sex, and so many other things. They do not try to seek out truth and what is beyond all this suffering. They are afraid to get in touch with their true self because that means admitting so many things they do not want to see of themselves and others. One should read Bhagavad Gita As it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada if they want to understand how to get out of this miserable condition all together. Being in the world but waking in spirit

They feel as though drugs and alcohol (and sometimes sex) are a release from their problems and shortcomings. They take every mistake and embarassment in their life and turn it against themselves. This makes them feel like crap and thats where the escape is required. After a while, they realise they are still wallowing in their problems but now they have increased. This makes their mental state worse. I guess they just crack.

I did drugs because It was better to get high than to face my daily problems and to deal with the shi-- other people dealt me every day..I suffer depression and when I was high..I wasn't depressed..nothing mattered.. That was the only time I was happy and enjoyed life..I didn't care who I hurt..as long as I didn't have to deal with my daily emotions and problems..I lost my son and it got worse.. Getting high killed the pain and loneliness..it was better than crying all the time

they have a lot of emotional pain and the only they know of relieving it is to get that temperary high. within that high, they get "away from it all" and don't have to worry about their problems.
