Isn´t America the Continent? Aren´t Canada, Mexico, and Latin America in the Americas... So a Mexican is an American, just not from the US, Right?

In the case of Africa, if you say... "the Africans" you think of the Continent..., if you say "European" you think about the Union... imagine if the French referred themselves as "the Europeans"... there would be a huge war there... why people from the US, when the say "americans" refer to the people of the country... and forget about ther more than one billion neighbours?

'Americans' as US Americans were called that by the British. And since the USA became a nation before anybody else in the two continents, they chose to put the name in the title of their country. Canadians even under British rule were not called Americans either. Anyway, most Americans do not care that Latinos call themselves Americans, most of us don't care either way. Are we supposed to say 'US Americans' because a Latino culture can't deal with an Anglo culture? Get over it. If your countrymen had really wanted to be called American, they would have put 'America' in some form in their nation's name.

Why all of a sudden is this an issue.. this is getting old.. we are called Americans because the name of our country is the United States of AMERICA.... now if you look at Canada.. it is called.. Canada.. if you look at Mexico... it is called the United Mexican States..do any countries in South America have America in their name... NO! that is why we are called Americans.. we have that in the name of our Country.... if a Mexican wants to call him/herself an American.. more power to him/her.. but it's not going to make them a US citizen.. so whatever floats their boat more power to them :) Chances are though that if you ask a Canadian if they wanted to be called American.. they would say NO.. if you asked a Mexican if they wanted to be called American.. they would say NO... sorry.. but people are proud of their country.. and an American means a Citizen of the United States of America.. have a nice night

Because we are the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. "America" is just short for that. A lot of places have such long names that is easier to say something shorter. Why are people making such an issue of it now when we have been called "America" for 230 years and it never was a problem before. I think you liberals and terrorist sympathizers just hate us and will go to great length to find a fault.

Here's a clue that may help you get it:

My country is called (pay close attention) THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Canada is called CANADA (you may note that the word America does not appear here)

Mexico is, coincidentally, THE REPUBLIC OF MEXICO (you may also note that the word America does not appear here either)

Now, I invite you to check your World Atlas and look at the South American Continent. You may note that not one single country has the word America in it's name. There's Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and many others but not one has America in it's name.

Therefore:

When you speak about AMERICANS, you are speaking about people who are citizens of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Got it?

Hence we call ourselves Americans.

People from Canada...Call themselves Canadians

People from South America...Call themselves South Americans..( Venezuelens, Nicaraguans, Bolivians, etc etc)

USA = AMERICA....Americans live there...any questions

This can be applied to Africa. Since Egypt is in Africa aren't they Africans? The logic of your question is obvious.
