I recently moved into my own townhouse. I would like to hear about your favorite board games or other games that can be played "physically" (not on the computer) when ppl come over? I want to build up a collection...

Please also tell the nature of the game or how you play it, and what's fun about it. Thanks!

Yay! I love to hear about this. More people should host their own game nights.

Apples to Apples is a card game where one tries to choose a noun (limited selection) which best fits a given adjective. Great fun and some of the answers are hilarious. There's also uno of course.

There's Boggle and Scrabble. Boggle is a lot more fast-paced and slightly less likely to be dominated by the wordy. Scattergories is a game of finding words of each letter that fit a certain categorie. Buying the game makes it simple, but it was a parlor game like charades long before it was trademarked and boxed.

Risk can be fun, but like monopoly it can drag on. It's not for everybody.

Icehouse pieces from looney labs can be used to play hundreds of game to please almost anyone.

A quick list of other games I've found fun: Blokus, Elixir, Fluxx, Roborally, Settlers of Cataan, Pirate's Cove, Carcassonne, Pictionary, Yahtzee, and let us not forget Twister.

Some games, like charades, I avoid out of self-consciousness. I need to work on that. But if that's not a problem, then Encore and Once Upon a Time can be great fun among friends.

I'm also a major proponent of Go (aslo called wei chi or baduk), but that's more a deep thinking game between two players, like chess or reversi (Othello)

For more suggestions you can check out boardgamegeek.com. Picking up a book on parlor games might be a good idea too. And a copy of Hoyle's. You might also check out Craig's List or Meetin.com for gaming groups in your area.

Ok, sorry for dragging it out so. Hope some was helpful. Good luck and have fun.

My family always had fun playing Pictionary. You have teams, one person on each team draws a given word while the other team members try to guess what is being drawn. The first team to guess moves forward on the board and the first team to reach the end wins.
We also had fun with Balderdash. You play this by making up definitions to a given word. A moderator reads out the made up definitions as well as the real one and people try to guess the correct one to advance.
Taboo, Cranium and certain Trivial Pursuit Editions are fun, too.

Imaginiff. Basically, you have six people max, a board where you can write other people's names. On each turn, a dice is rollen which determines the person you want to put in a imaginary scenario. A card is drawn where you substitute their name. For example: "Imaginiff is an animal. What would they be?" There would then be six choices, in this case, are "Sheep dog, Chimpanzee, Koala Bear, Bull, Panther, and Toad" If the person gets the most popular answer, they can move. It's sort of an incomplete explanation, but you can visit the site to help you.

I recently go this game ''Boxers or Briefs" It is halarious for you and some 'close' friends....i'll explain why i said 'close'.....
You chose a target and then the other players have a few different describing cards... the target rolls a topic and the other players read their cards under that topic and find which card has the most true statement about the target and the most funny statement to the target.....the target collects the chosen cards and shuffles them and reads them outloud and gives points to the ones they think are the best and most accurate...... some statements are as funny as "I like.. the smell of my own farts" or "I want.. to be a racecar driver" or "I wish.. I had funnier friends"
It's a fun game of learning what others think about you hence the 'close' friend thing. Try looking it up.

Apples to Apples is a great game for groups of people. It's fun, especially if you have some people with a sense of humor. It's a word game but with cards that come with the game. We played it at my birthday party. We also have pictionary (which me and all my friends are in love with) and an old game called aggravation, which is kinda like sorry.

Pictionary and Taboo are very fun, but I also like Cranium, which combines drawing, charades, trivia and more all into one. Another game I like is Loaded Questions. Everyone has to answer a question and you have to guess which answers belong to which person. Congrats on your new townhouse!

Highly recommend Bang from Da Vinci Games for shorter, less strategic card game of roles, intrigue and mayhem.

Outlaws and Lawmen are trying to shoot each other while the Renegade tries to be the last man standing. The problem is you don't know who is friend and who is foe.

Play your cards, dodge bullets, escape Indians and on occassion, go shopping for bigger guns and more bullets. And when you find yourself running low on health, have a beer.

Risk is always fun. 2-6 people play, the objective is to control the world, you play by attack everybody and battles are decided by dice rolls. Games take hours though.
