Being a softball coach myself (middle school) i suggest you teach them some basic fundamentals first, then start getting into mechanics and fine-tune their different weaknesses. Here are a couple of good sites for some other ideas and questions you may have.

My sister won the Class C Softball Championship with Sacopee Valley High School in Maine. (Not that it mattes) But a good idea is to teach fundamentals. It would be a good idea to give every kid a chance at every position. But also, look for where the kids are good at. Once you do that, have them focus in that area. That will be good for their future.

Make them run and get in shape, then focus on the fundamentals, that's the best way to make a good ball team. But be fair to every player, don't give one person more attention than everyone else, because that makes the players mad and they wont play very good for you. Depending on how old they are, make them do a whole lot of stretches and drills. it's always good to practice on ground balls, hitting the ball, and catching. Before you know it, your team will be at the little league world championships!!!
